Lumbar vertebra

Typical single human lumbar vertebra shown in anatomical superior-oblique view as a large, robust, weight-bearing bone in pale ivory to off-white color. It has a massive kidney-shaped to slightly cylindrical vertebral body, a broad triangular vertebral foramen, thick stout pedicles, broad laminae, strong articular processes, long laterally projecting transverse processes, and a short, broad, blunt hatchet-shaped spinous process projecting posteriorly. The surface is smooth cortical bone with subtle texture and shading, giving a heavy blocklike appearance characteristic of the lower spine.
