Bundle or compact fragment of cardiac muscle tissue (myocardium), shown in reddish pink to deep red-pink tones. Composed of short interconnected branching cylindrical fibers joined end to end with irregular forked branches, forming a compact interwoven network. The fibers show faint to visible transverse cross-striations, one and occasionally two centrally placed oval nuclei, and dark transverse or step-like intercalated disc lines crossing between cells at irregular intervals. Overall appearance is clearly identifiable as myocardium by the branched structure and intercalated discs.
