Antral ovarian follicle

Cross-sectional view of a large spherical ovarian follicle with a smooth circular outer boundary and thin to moderately thick follicle wall. The follicle contains a large pale fluid-filled antrum occupying the center or most of the interior, with a round oocyte positioned centrally or more often off-center near one side, enclosed by layered granulosa cells. Multiple concentric granulosa cell layers form the inner wall, and in the more detailed mature appearance an outer theca layer surrounds them. The structure is shown in soft pink, cream, tan, pale lavender, and light yellow tones, with the fluid space rendered as pale translucent or light blue-tinted.
