A single vascular endothelial cell viewed from the surface as a very thin, flattened simple squamous lining cell. The cell has an elongated oval to irregular polygonal, spindle-to-polygonal, tile-like outline with smooth delicate borders and gently tapering attenuated edges. The cytoplasm is extremely thin and translucent, colored pale pink to pale blue-gray or light tan. A centrally placed elongated oval nucleus is slightly darker and subtly bulges above the otherwise flat surface. Overall it has the streamlined tile-like appearance typical of the interior lining of a blood vessel.
