Fovea

Small central pit-like region of the retina, shown either as a tiny circular or oval specialized spot on the retinal surface or as a shallow bowl-shaped depression in cross-section. It has a smooth central dip with sharply defined margins, is noticeably smaller than the surrounding macular area, and may appear slightly darker red-pink, yellowish, or pale gold compared with adjacent retinal tissue. In sectional views, the inner retinal layers are thinned over the pit and densely packed slender cone photoreceptors are concentrated at the center. Tissue is delicate and layered, typically rendered in pale pink, purple, cream, tan, or subtle yellow tones.
