Large intestine

A simplified human large intestine shown as a thick, broad-caliber intestinal tube in pale pink to tan or pink-beige, with a thicker wall and wider lumen than the small intestine. The colon forms the characteristic frame-like abdominal shape with ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid segments, sometimes extending distally toward the rectal region. The surface shows rounded segmented pouch-like haustra or sacculations, with a generally smooth outer contour and occasional subtle longitudinal banding. Overall appearance is less tightly coiled than the small intestine.
