Simplified textbook-style cross-sectional metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor. Show a broad rectangular semiconductor substrate or body with two embedded rectangular doped regions at the left and right representing source and drain, a thin channel region between them near the top surface, a very thin insulating oxide layer directly above the channel, and a flat metallic gate electrode above the oxide. Use clean engineering lines, distinct layered materials, and muted semiconductor colors such as metallic gray for the gate, pale light gray, white, or light blue for the oxide, and subdued purple or gray for the semiconductor. Source and drain may be labeled.
