A round to nearly spherical sea urchin with a rigid globular test mostly hidden beneath a dense covering of long, thin, sharp movable spines radiating outward in all directions, creating a bristling ball-like silhouette. The body may be nearly spherical to slightly flattened or dome-shaped, with the shell only faintly visible between the spines. Typical coloration is dark overall, including black, dark purple, deep green, reddish, or brown tones. Subtle five-part symmetry is only faintly suggested beneath the spines, with tiny tube feet barely visible between them, and a small central oral area located on the underside.
