Channel pinched off

2D schematic of a MOSFET channel in the pinched-off state beneath the gate oxide. The conducting channel appears as a band that is wider toward the source side and tapers sharply toward the drain side, narrowing to a very thin neck or pointed termination where the channel effectively ends before reaching the drain. Near the gate-drain end, a large depletion region intrudes into the channel, making the conductive path nearly disappear. The channel may be shown as a darker band within the semiconductor, with the constricted drain-side tip clearly emphasized.
