Mercury barometer

A classic mercury barometer with a long, narrow transparent glass tube closed at the top and inverted vertically into a small open round reservoir or shallow dish filled with silvery mercury. The lower open end of the tube is submerged in the mercury, and a tall mercury column rises inside the tube. Above the mercury column is a clearly visible empty space at the top of the tube. The glass tube should extend noticeably higher than the mercury column, with clear glass walls showing the liquid level distinctly.
