Each muscle appears kite- to trapezoid-shaped in pink-red to deep red, extending from the occipital and posterior neck region and midline of the upper thorax laterally to the clavicle, acromion, and spine of the scapula. The superior neck-shoulder contour is wide and sheet-like, with the form tapering toward its lower midline extent and narrowing toward the lateral attachments. Visible muscle fiber texture includes subtle striations with descending, transverse, and ascending fiber regions, plus a thin aponeurotic area near the midline.
