Superior mediastinum

Simplified anatomical region silhouette of the superior mediastinum in the upper central thorax, shown as a vertically elongated wedge- or short inverted trapezoid-shaped compartment between the lungs. The region is broad superiorly at the thoracic inlet and narrows inferiorly toward the transverse thoracic plane, with smooth anatomical borders and soft light pink, pale tan, or pink-gray semi-transparent shading to indicate a mediastinal space rather than a solid organ. Simplified internal outlines of the trachea, esophagus, thymus, and great vessels are visible within this upper mediastinal compartment above the heart.
