A single short mixed peripheral spinal nerve near the vertebral column, shown in pale yellow to yellowish-white as a thick cord-like cylindrical to slightly flattened tubular trunk with a smooth outer sheath and faint fascicular texture. Two proximal roots, the anterior and posterior (ventral and dorsal) roots, join to form a somewhat thicker proximal segment. The nerve then extends laterally as a short flexible trunk and quickly divides distally into small branches, including a subtle bifurcation into anterior and posterior branches or dorsal and ventral rami. The ends may appear rounded or slightly tapered, with an anatomy-diagram appearance.
