Anatomy

Pelvic diaphragm

Inferior view of the pelvic diaphragm as a broad funnel- or bowl-shaped muscular sheet spanning the pelvic outlet. It is formed by paired left and right pink-red to deep red skeletal muscle sheets that slope medially like a supportive sling or hammock and meet toward the midline, creating a concave pelvic floor contour. The structure has a central U-shaped or midline gap for pelvic passages, with a posterior opening for the anal canal. The inferior surface is smooth with subtle striations, and some pale tendinous or fascial margins may be visible along the edges.
