Large superficial trapezius muscle of the upper back and posterior neck shown as a broad flat paired skeletal muscle sheet, red to red-pink in color with visible striated fiber direction. Each side is triangular to kite-shaped, arising broadly along the midline from the skull through the cervical and thoracic spine with a long medial aponeurotic border, then extending laterally toward the shoulder with tapering attachments. The paired left and right muscles together form a broad trapezoid across the upper back, with the upper portion wide and thin and the sheet narrowing inferiorly.
