The main trunk is broader than nearby smaller nerves, slightly narrower than the sciatic nerve but thicker than the common fibular nerve, with gentle tapering distally and a few smaller side branches or terminal bifurcating plantar branches arising at acute angles near the lower leg, medial ankle, and foot in standard anatomical style.
