Large thick-walled bright to deep red arterial trunk representing the thoracic aorta, with a prominent superior arch transitioning into a gently curving then vertically descending course through the chest. The vessel has a broad caliber, smooth cylindrical elastic wall, slight tapering along the descending length, and a clean round lumen if shown in section. Major branch stumps emerge from the superior aspect of the arch, and several small paired or short lateral branch arteries or branch openings may arise along the side of the descending portion. The main vessel remains larger and more robust than surrounding vessels.
