Great Work (Magnum Opus) Stages: Nigredo (Blackening): Decomposition, putrefaction, burning away impurities. Symbolic of confronting the shadow, inner chaos. Albedo (Whitening): Purification, washing, distillation. Symbolic of spiritual cleansing, illumination. Citrinitas (Yellowing): Often merged with Rubedo, but historically represented solar consciousness, dawning of higher wisdom. Rubedo (Reddening): Coagulation, conjunction, final transformation. Symbolic of unification of opposites, creation of the Philosopher's Stone, spiritual rebirth.
