UNIT 1: Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering Structure of Solids Engineering Materials: The study of how a material's atomic and molecular structure influences its macroscopic properties and performance in engineering applications. Materials selection is critical for product design. Interatomic Forces & Atomic Structures: Interatomic Forces: Attractive and repulsive forces between atoms determine the equilibrium spacing and bonding energy. Attractive forces: Dominate at larger distances, primarily electrostatic. Repulsive forces: Dominate at very short distances due to electron cloud overlap. Potential Energy Curve: A minimum in the energy-distance curve corresponds to the equilibrium bond length ($r_0$) and bond energy ($E_0$). A deeper well means a stronger bond and higher melting point. Atomic Arrangements: Atoms can arrange in a highly ordered, repeating 3D pattern (crystalline) or randomly (amorphous). Chemical Bonding: The forces holding atoms together. Ionic Bond: Formed between highly electronegative (non-metal) and electropositive (metal) elements. Involves electron transfer, creating oppositely charged ions that attract electrostatically. Characteristics: Non-directional, strong, high melting points, brittle, electrical insulators (in solid state). Examples: NaCl, MgO, CaF$_2$. Covalent Bond: Formed by the sharing of valence electrons between two atoms to achieve a stable electron configuration. Can be single, double, or triple bonds. Structure-Property Correlations Mechanical Properties: Strength, hardness, ductility, stiffness determined by bond strength, crystal structure, and presence of defects. Stronger bonds usually lead to higher strength and melting points. Electrical Properties: Conductivity depends on the availability of free electrons. Metals have delocalized electrons, insulators have tightly bound electrons, semiconductors have a small band gap. UNIT 2: Crystal Structure and X-ray Diffraction Crystal Structure Fundamentals Crystal Lattice: An infinite array of points in space, each having identical surroundings. Unit Cell: The smallest repeating unit of a crystal lattice that, when translated in 3D, generates the entire crystal. Lattice Parameters: The lengths of the unit cell edges (a, b, c) and the angles between them ($\alpha, \beta, \gamma$). Common Crystal Systems: Cubic, Tetragonal, Orthorhombic, Hexagonal, Trigonal, Monoclinic, Triclinic (7 systems). Common Unit Cell Types: Simple Cubic (SC): 1 atom/unit cell, coordination number (CN)=6. Body-Centered Cubic (BCC): 2 atoms/unit cell, CN=8. Example: Fe, Cr, W. Face-Centered Cubic (FCC): 4 atoms/unit cell, CN=12. Example: Al, Cu, Au, Ag. Hexagonal Close-Packed (HCP): 6 atoms/unit cell, CN=12. Example: Mg, Zn, Ti. Atomic Packing Factor (APF): Volume of atoms in unit cell / Total volume of unit cell. SC: 0.52, BCC: 0.68, FCC: 0.74, HCP: 0.74 (maximum for spheres). Crystallographic Directions: Represented by [uvw]. Vector components are projected onto axes, reduced to smallest integers, and enclosed in square brackets. Negative indices have a bar over them. Family of directions (e.g., ) includes all equivalent directions due to symmetry. Crystallographic Planes (Miller Indices): Represented by (hkl). Find intercepts of the plane with the crystal axes (a, b, c) in terms of lattice parameters. Take reciprocals of these intercepts. Clear fractions to get the smallest integers (h, k, l). Enclose in parentheses (hkl). Negative indices have a bar. Family of planes (e.g., {100}) includes all equivalent planes due to symmetry. In cubic systems, a direction [hkl] is perpendicular to a plane (hkl). Reciprocal Lattice: A Fourier transform of the real-space lattice. Each point in reciprocal space corresponds to a set of parallel planes in real space. The vector from the origin to a reciprocal lattice point is normal to the real-space planes and its length is inversely proportional to the interplanar spacing ($d_{hkl}$). Essential for understanding diffraction patterns, as diffraction spots directly map to reciprocal lattice points. X-Rays Diffraction (XRD) Production of X-rays: Generated by accelerating electrons to high velocities and then rapidly decelerating them by striking a metal anode (target). Bremsstrahlung (continuous X-rays): Produced by deceleration of electrons. Characteristic X-rays: Produced when high-energy electrons eject inner-shell electrons from target atoms, and outer-shell electrons drop to fill the vacancies, emitting X-ray photons of specific energies/wavelengths. (e.g., Cu K$\alpha$, Mo K$\alpha$). Interaction of X-rays with Matter: Scattering: Elastic (coherent - no energy loss, used in diffraction) and inelastic (Compton scattering). Absorption: Photoelectric effect (dominant at low energies), leading to energy dissipation. Bragg's Law: $n\lambda = 2d \sin\theta$ Condition for constructive interference of X-rays diffracted by crystal planes. $n$: Order of reflection (typically $n=1$ for primary peaks). $\lambda$: Wavelength of the incident X-ray beam. $d$: Interplanar spacing between parallel atomic planes of the crystal. $\theta$: Bragg angle (half the angle between incident and diffracted beams). Diffraction from Crystalline Solids: When Bragg's Law is satisfied, X-rays scattered from different atomic planes constructively interfere, producing a diffraction peak. The position of the peaks ($2\theta$) is determined by $d_{hkl}$ and thus by the lattice parameters and crystal structure. The intensity of the peaks depends on the atomic scattering factor of each atom and their arrangement within the unit cell (structure factor). Intensities of Diffracted Beams (Structure Factor $F_{hkl}$): $I \propto |F_{hkl}|^2$. $F_{hkl} = \sum_{j=1}^N f_j e^{2\pi i (hu_j + kv_j + lw_j)}$, where $f_j$ is the atomic scattering factor for atom $j$ at fractional coordinates $(u_j, v_j, w_j)$. Certain reflections are systematically absent for specific crystal structures (e.g., for FCC, $h,k,l$ must be all odd or all even; for BCC, $h+k+l$ must be even). This helps in identifying the crystal system. X-ray Diffractometer (XRD Equipment): X-ray Tube: Generates X-rays (e.g., Cu anode, K$\alpha$ radiation). Goniometer: Precision instrument that rotates the sample and detector, controlling the incident and scattering angles ($2\theta$). Sample Holder: Mounts the material to be analyzed. Detector: Measures the intensity of the diffracted X-rays at various $2\theta$ angles. Crystal Structure Determination: Obtaining an XRD pattern (intensity vs. $2\theta$). Measurement of crystallite size and strain. Texture analysis (preferred orientation). Electron & Neutron Diffractions: Electron Diffraction: Uses electrons (de Broglie wavelength $\lambda = h/p$). Advantages: Stronger interaction with matter (good for thin films, surfaces), high spatial resolution (TEM). Disadvantages: High vacuum required, strong interaction makes bulk analysis difficult. Neutron Diffraction: Uses neutrons. Advantages: Penetrates deeply, sensitive to light elements (H, D), sensitive to magnetic moments. Disadvantages: Requires a nuclear reactor or spallation source, expensive. UNIT 3: Novel Materials – Properties and Applications Superconductors Introduction: Materials exhibiting two key phenomena below a critical temperature ($T_c$): Zero Electrical Resistance: Current flows indefinitely without energy loss. Meissner Effect: Complete expulsion of magnetic flux from the interior, making them perfect diamagnets. Critical Parameters: Superconductivity is destroyed if temperature ($T$), magnetic field ($H$), or current density ($J$) exceeds critical values ($T_c, H_c, J_c$). Types of Superconductors: Type I Superconductors: Pure metals (e.g., Al, Pb, Hg). Exhibit a sharp transition to the superconducting state. Below $H_c$, they are perfect diamagnets (complete Meissner effect). Above $H_c$, normal state. Limited practical applications due to low $T_c$ and $H_c$.
